Bryn Mawr Soccer Player Signs National Letter of Intent
Senior Riley Barger will play for the University of Maryland College Park
Baltimore, MD – The Bryn Mawr School is proud to announce that senior soccer player Riley Barger has signed her National Letter of Intent. Barger, a center mid-fielder, will play for the University of Maryland College Park starting in the fall of 2012.
In her four years with Bryn Mawr’s Varsity Soccer team, Barger helped to lead the team to three consecutive IAAM B Conference Championships in 2010, 2011 and 2012. She has scored 47 career goals and had 61 career assists, including four goals and one assist in the conference tournament, and game winning goals in all three tournament games. The most decorated soccer player ever to compete for Bryn Mawr, Barger was named an IAAM Conference All-Star all four years of her varsity career, was chosen for the Baltimore Sun First Team All-Metro both her junior and senior years, was named to the First Team All-State by the Maryland Association of Coaches of Soccer (MACS) and received the Senior Excellence Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA), among other honors.
Off the field, Barger has volunteered for the past three years with the Survivors 7 Race in Baltimore, worked as a counselor at Elkridge Summer Youth Camp, and volunteered as a demonstrator and youth coach for the Fallston Girls Soccer at Fallston Recreation Counsel.
Bryn Mawr Varsity Soccer Head Coach Tina Steck is confident that Barger will have a great impact on her new team at the University of Maryland. "Riley Barger is a gifted athlete and soccer player,” Steck said. “Our program greatly benefited from her skill and leadership. Not only is she technically proficient and tactically aware, she has an unparalleled work ethic and competitive drive that has helped propel her to excel. Riley understands and portrays the best qualities of a dependable teammate while also possessing the ability to accept the responsibility of making a big play. Riley is the type of player every coach desires to have on their team and she has left an indelible impression on all aspects of the Bryn Mawr soccer program."
Athletic Director Wendy Kridel said that Barger’s accomplishments have also helped to raise the profile of Bryn Mawr’s soccer program. “Bryn Mawr has a lot to offer, athletically,” Kridel commented. “[Riley’s success] will help to encourage other strong soccer players to come to Bryn Mawr, by showing them that they will be able to benefit from great coaching and from working with great teammates.”
This is the second National Letter of Intent signing ceremony for Bryn Mawr this year. In November, five students committed to playing lacrosse at their chosen schools: Kassandra Bowling to Georgetown University, Nancy Dunbar to Northwestern University, Josie George and Caroline Turco to Johns Hopkins University, and Molly Wolf to Loyola University.
