17-6 Fourth Quarter Propels John Carroll Over Mt. de Sales (2.15.12) provided by Coach Blizzard ~
For most of the night it was a see saw battle between John Carroll and Mt. de Sales in IAAM quarter-final action, but a 17-6 fourth quarter domination by the Patriots proved to be the difference as John Carroll advances to the semi-final round with a 54-45 win. Both teams enjoyed first half leads of no more than 4 points as the Patriots got off to a slow start shooting the basketball drawing more air than iron. John Carroll's Miranda Ripken and Mt. de Sales Lillian Robb provided most of the scoring for their teams in the first half with 9 points each and a 24-22 Sailor lead at the half. However in the third quarter both teams started to heat up as Emily Soller got on track for the Patriots after Mt. de Sales had stretched their lead to 5 points mid-way through the 3rd. Soller ended the night leading all scorers with 23 points, 19 in the second half and was 7 for 7 from the free throw line while draing 2 three's. In fact it was senior center Soller and Freshman Center Ashley Hunter who combined for all 17 Patriot points in the decisive 4th quarter. "The Sailors cause us match-up problems as they have 3 or 4 small quick guards that we struggle to keep up with" said Patriot Head Coach Mike Blizzard. "We decided to go big with 2 centers and make them try to stop us when Miranda got her 4th foul in the final quarter and it paid off." Miranda Ripken had another steady game with 14 points for John Carroll despite missing 6 minutes in the second half with foul trouble. Robb led the Sailors with 16 points while Cha and Hand added 10 each. The Patriots will host #3 seed Bryn Mawr Thursday night for a 5:30 tip-off. The winner of that game advances to the Championship at UMBC on Saturday at 3:00 PM.

Mercy senior Alexis Prior-Brown and Bryn Mawr senior Riley Barger have signed their national letters of intent to play soccer next year at Maryland.

A forward, Prior-Brown had 23 goals and 11 assists this fall. She finished her four-year career with 53 goals and 25 assists.
Barger, a midfielder, led the Mawrtians to three straight IAAM B Conference titles, scoring winning goals in the past two championship games.
