“Sam has set the standard for distance runners at Mount De Sales,” remarks the Head Cross Country and Track Coach, Steve Weber.  That is a pretty high compliment, considering the number of great runners who have worn the Sailors uniform.

Just a couple weeks ago, Sam Facius finished second at the IAAM cross country championships, helping to lead her team to their first A conference championship.  In finishing second, it appears she is the only four time IAAM A conference cross country all star.  In her four cross country championships, she has finished third, fifth, first, and second.

Her championship win in 2017 is one of her most memorable races.  “I’m really happy with how I ran championships last year.  In holding back the whole race and then having a big kick at the finish.  That was huge for me.  And I ended up PRing.  I’m definitely always going to remember that.  That was a huge win for me.”

Her resume this season includes a third place finish at the Barnhart Invite, a second place finish in the elite division at Bull Run, and the overall win at the Scorpion Crawl.

While certainly a talented runner, she has not shied away from the hard work necessary to continue to improve.   As a freshmen, she ran 20:52 on the Bull Run course finishing eighth in the small school division;  this year, she ran 19:33 to finish second in the elite division.  It hasn’t always been easy, though.  Facius has had difficulty balancing that hard work, feeling the effects of burnout.  “Last summer I packed in a lot of mileage.  I think I over trained a little bit, so by the end of the season I was burned out almost in the post season meets.  This summer I built up a base gradually.”

During the season Facius says interval workouts are what prepares her most for races.  “I love working hard and pushing in those workouts.  The interval workouts are definitely where I feel the most powerful.  Little recovery time.  That’ll make me feel prepared.”

Cross country is not the end of the line for Facius.  De Sales has a very strong team for indoor and outdoor track.  The Sailors will be shooting for the very difficult triple crown by winning cross country, indoor, and outdoor.  Along the way, Facius is focusing on setting a new personal best in the mile and possibly anchoring the distance medley at some big races.

After de Sales, she plans to continue her running career at a college that is still to be decided.

Describing her love of the sport, Weber says, “Sam is one of those rare individuals who loves to run. At the end of a workout she always asks for more.”
